Abnormal Uterine Bleeding in Adolescents

Abnormal uterine bleeding is a frequent cause of gynecological consultation in adolescents. Objective: to determine the incidence of abnormal uterine bleeding in adolescents treated at the Dr. Francisco de Icaza Bustamante Children’s Hospital, and to characterize its clinical causes and institutional management.
Materials and Methods: This study analyzed the incidence of Abnormal uterine bleeding in patients aged 10 to 13 years treated at the Dr. Francisco de Icaza Bustamante Children’s Hospital between November 2024 and October 2025. Fifteen confirmed cases were identified, with a predominance of anovulatory etiology. Nine patients (60%) required blood transfusion.
Treatment: Management included blood transfusion, weight-adjusted tranexamic acid, and combined hormonal therapy with ethinylestradiol + levonorgestrel. The patient with lupus was managed without hormones, using corticosteroid therapy.
Results: Ten patients (66%) have continued institutional follow-up with successful clinical outcomes.
Conclusions: Most of the patients studied live in urban–marginal areas. Multidisciplinary clinical management was emphasized, involving psychology, pediatrics, social work, and nutrition.
